NASA's Psyche spacecraft has begun its journey to a unique metal-rich asteroid orbiting the Sun between Mars and Jupiter.

The asteroid Psyche is thought to be the exposed nickel-iron core of an early planet, one of the building blocks of our solar system.

The Psyche mission will study the asteroid's composition, structure, and history to help scientists better understand how planets form and evolve.  The spacecraft is scheduled to arrive at Psyche in 2026 and spend 21 months orbiting and studying the asteroid.
